Hey guys...
I just became the owner of our Cloud Computing environment at work and I started thinking that there's a possible opportunity here for the 101st-Clan.
Before getting into this too deep, here's my thought on how it could work for us... Instead of paying for just a Battlefield 2 "instance" - meaning that we just get server slots on a single server version of the game plus the admin tools, we would pay equal or less for a full server where we can fire up our own instances, include our own tools and our own Vent without paying "slot" fees.
Now, before you start poking me full of holes, I don't know what our current setup is and how much things are. I only know what I've seen out on the internet as far as costs. Also, there may be a benefit in having a third party setting up the server and we don't have to worry about it.
On the other hand, it costs .12 per hour for a Windows machine, or, $87 per month. it drops even more if we dish out $250 up front and then we pay .05 per hour or $36.50 a month. What that gives us is a Windows 2008 server with 160 GB disk, 1.7 gigs RAM and roughly a 2 Ghz CPU. I'm not sure if a Linux version of the server has been released but that would save us some more cash.
There are other hardware types, much larger than this but there's also a cost trade-off.
Final thought here is that the only way to bring up multiple instances of BC2 on the same server would be to change the default port on the second and each additional instance after that. In order to fire up multiple servers on the same port, we would need multiple servers at a multiple of the costs I showed above.
One side note is that with the disk space available, we would have ample storage for BBS's, photos and whatever you can throw at it.
Again, however, having that layer of support and not having to worry about setup / config / break-fix issues may be worth much more than having our own dedicated server.

We have done this in the past and it ended up being a major headache. Obviously the more you pay per month the better the server quality is but the affordable ones have been quarky.

for BC2 u need to have the server files.
only trusted providers have them so we a re locked out of that.
for other games like COD 4 we could.
as of now here is how it breaks down in $
bc2 server 32 slots $39.95/month
ventrilo server 25 slots $3.95
the web server another $7/month
in total like $41/month
if we played a game that had server files available I would try it.
thanks for looking out for us maybe in the future we can give it shot.

I figured we had enough tech people here that you've looked into this but I thought just in case, I'd share. Thanks for responding and letting me know.
